Autistic Joy: Resistance to the Deficit Narrative

I wrote an essay called "My Own Drum" to apply to be a part of a book about Autistic Joy and then I forgot about it. I recently learned that my essay was selected as one of ten to be published, but the author, Jackie Schuld, decided to shift the book project to articles on Medium. Check out the short essay and video of a 7 minute talk and some dance moves at the end below!
We need to highlight the joy in Autistic and Neurodivergent lives and stop focusing on our deficits, struggles, and challenges. Both are important to acknowledge, but let's celebrate our big, intense joy!
Jackie Schuld is an autistic artist and art therapist. In her therapy practice, she works with late-identified autistics who want to learn how to work with their autistic minds and build joyful, meaningful lives. In her art, she combines essays and paintings to explore topics that are important to her. She's written and illustrated seven books, including Life as a Late-Identified Autistic and Grief is a Mess.
